Footnotes:

* Recommended
** Especially recommended

[H] Hugo winner

Notes:
[1] Least favorite book of the year
[2] I found this in some ways similar to the Doyle/Macdonald book, which I thought was actually superior. Although I enjoyed the Novik, it was sort of emotionally flat and my interest drifted after book 2.
[3] my personal top pick for the Hugo, though the Vinge and the Stross were close seconds.
[4] consider all Edward Gorey automatically highly recommended
[5] I enjoyed this, but I hit a point about 3/4 of the way through the book where I realized that I was having trouble following it and should have been making diagrams as I read along (not a good thing). If I'd enjoyed it a little more I might have gone back and tried exactly that. As it was, I finished it, picked up book 2, and stalled about a third of the way into it for precisely that reason -- too hard to follow.
