FIRST DRAFT

Excerpt

She lay on her back on the thin mattress, sweating in the stale, motionless air as she listened to the arrythmic, tin can sounds of water dripping somewhere nearby. It had gone on for most of the night, one drop after another, sometimes closely followed by the next, sometimes not. It never stopped for long, which meant it was probably not urine or a chemical flush from above but real, honest rain. She hoped that Lowdown wasn't going to flood again, and desperately wished that it would.
Groaning, she sat up and swung her legs off the bunk. Her bare feet dangled above the heavy boots that waited between her and the unspeakable floor. She ran one hand across her face and stared around at the eight-foot-square metal cube that was the closest she had ever come to having a home.
